Molokai Habitat for Humanity (MHFH) became
an affiliate in 1998, and since then has completed 16 homes. MHFH is the only
affiliate serving the low-income families on the island of Molokai. It is our
mission to eliminate poverty housing on our island. With the highest rates of
unemployment and cost of living in the state of Hawaii, there is a great need
for help in ending the affordable housing and homeless crisis here on Molokai.
Our goal is to give homeowners a "hand-up" not a
"hand-out".
What’s
Habitat for Humanity International?
Habitat for Humanity International has
built more than 300,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1,000,000
people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter.
Habitat International was founded in 1976 by Millard Fuller along with his wife
Linda. For more information, or to find out more about Habitat for Humanity
International, visit http://www.habitat.org
How
does it work?
Through volunteer labor and donations of
money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses
with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to
partner families at no profit, financed with affordable loans. The homeowners'
monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses. Habitat
is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and the monthly
mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor --
sweat equity -- into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.
How
are families selected?
Families in need of decent shelter
apply to Molokai Habitat for Humanity. Our family selection committee then
choose homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness to become
partners in the program and their ability to repay the loan. Molokai Habitat
for Humanity follows a non-discriminatory policy of family selection. Neither
race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families who receive Habitat
houses.
Molokai Habitat for Humanity is located on the
island of Molokai, in the city of Ho’olehua at Lanikeha Center.
